What does this mean for you, as a business owner?

There are two direct impacts to be discussed:

First: Where you Service the Big Corporates

The big corporates are mostly already POPI compliant, or well on their way there.  As a “Responsible Party”, the  Corporate needs to ensure that it’s 3rd parties treats Personal Information in a responsible way, in accordance with the POPI Act.  This means that anyone servicing or wishing to service these corporates, will be assessed for their continued POPI compliance. If your business hopes to remain competitive in this market, POPI compliance is no longer an optional choice.

Second:  You service individuals

As POPI becomes more mainstream, the privacy topic will become a topic of conversation in the pub, around the braai, and at the dinner-table.  The awareness this creates with individuals will make us all more sensitive to how our Personal Information is treated by the companies we support.  This goes for our tax consultant, accountant, doctor, hairdresser, and the kids nursery school.  As a business owner, you need to be able to willingly and transparently show your POPI compliance, or risk losing your most valued clients.
